Labour should take UK back into EU to ease its political problems as Daily Mail poll supports rejoining, Rejoin EU Party says
Keir Starmer and Labour should embrace rejoining the EU to rescue themselves and the UK from the political crisis engulfing the government, the Rejoin EU Party says.
Labour’s popularity among voters remains in the doldrums and the continuing controversy over the government’s appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US is doing nothing to ease its woes.
While it remains to be seen what happens in the Mandelson saga, what’s clear is that Starmer or any possible successor would do themselves a big favour by taking note of the obvious and growing public consensus in favour of rejoining the EU.
The latest evidence is in a Daily Mail online straw poll asking whether the UK should rejoin the EU, showing that, of more than 36,600 votes cast so far, 86% favour rejoining, 10% back staying out and 3% support so-called “closer ties”.
Rejoin EU Party leader Richard Morley said: “Nearly 10 years after the Brexit vote, the disaster of leaving the EU is clear. According to their own poll of tens of thousands, even Daily Mail readers, typically the very backbone of Brexit support, now realise we must reverse it.
“But still Starmer’s government refuses to listen to the people. It talks of closer EU ties, but demands concessions that prevent even that. Like Johnson, Truss and Sunak before him, the fear of admitting to the greatest British mistake since Suez, if not the biggest ever, is blinding Starmer.
“It’s time to reverse the error and embark on the long road back. It’s time common sense prevails and for Britain to return to reality – the EU.”
Rejoin EU chairman and former MEP Brendan Donnelly said: “Rejoining the EU is now the best and only way that this government can get back on track.
“It would be popular, it would make economic sense and it would put Starmer’s opponents on the back foot. Why is he hesitating? He has everything to gain and nothing to lose. He should do it now.”
