*Letter to the editor from Jim Newell, deputy leader of the Rejoin EU Party and prospective Rejoin EU parliamentary candidate for Stretford & Urmston*
“The major parties’ silence on Brexit in this general election campaign is unsurprising: the Conservatives are unable to point to any evidence of genuine “Brexit benefits” and Labour fears that rapprochement with Brussels will expose it to accusations of “Brexit betrayal”.
How, then, should those recognising Brexit as the key issue underlying our economic malaise cast their votes? The idea that a Labour government will offer any significant rapprochement, having declined to ask for a mandate for one, seems fanciful. If it is frightened of taking on Farage and co. now, why assume it will be any less fearful after the election?
Labour leader Keir Starmer knows that with the Conservatives ideologically committed to Brexit, the fact that many voters’ effective choices are limited to the two front-runners in each constituency frees him from any pressure whatsoever to offer anything significant to Re-joiners to win their support.
So re-joiners should exert pressure on Starmer by rebelling and voting for the Rejoin EU Party instead. Such a vote is not wasted. The 2.5% achieved in the list ballot of the London Assembly election with 62,528 votes, leaving it sixth of 15 parties and the highest-placed party not to secure a seat in the London Assembly, raised the party’s profile and created a springboard for more progress in the general election. A heightened profile means a heightened capacity to attract further votes and so on.
We won’t re-join the EU tomorrow, but even modest support for the Rejoin EU Party at the forthcoming election will bring that day much closer.”

*The Rejoin EU party is campaigning to re-join the EU because we believe re-joining is the only way to solve the multiple problems Brexit has created. Brexit is broken and it’s breaking our country too. All the promises on which Brexit was sold to the electorate in 2016 were nonsense. Far from reducing red tape and providing £350m a week for the NHS, Brexit makes trading with the crucial European market more complex, difficult and expensive and threatens to reduce funding for public services. If you agree Brexit is making our country poorer, less tolerant and less united, join us and send a message to Westminster that you want your EU membership back, with all its freedoms and benefits.*
