*UK should move closer to EU – and even Sunak’s ex-bosses think so too*
The Rejoin EU Party is gearing up for the forthcoming general election after voters backed its message to Westminster politicians in this month’s local elections that they can’t ignore Brexit.
The party came 6th out of 15 parties on the list ballot in the London Assembly elections with 62,528 votes, becoming the highest-placed party not to get an assembly member elected and saving its deposit (results here <therejoineuparty.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e82601392518badc0078f4d82&id=5f53bf1d98&e=87166040e4> ).
We believe the result bears out polls showing voters’ growing discontent with Brexit and rising popular support for re-joining the EU – and that politicians have nothing to fear by moving back towards Europe.
As if to illustrate that, US investment banking giant Goldman Sachs – which used to employ Rishi Sunak – said in a research note last week that voters are now more concerned about the country’s struggling economy than the political arguments surrounding Brexit.
Goldman said UK investment growth has stalled since the 2016 referendum, the UK economy’s GDP has under-performed that of similar economies by between 4-8% and sterling has fallen 16% and 11% versus the US dollar and the euro respectively since the vote.
Whereas the last election was fought mainly on Europe and Brexit – with Boris Johnson pledging to ‘get Brexit done’ – it’s no longer the dominant issue for voters, Goldman said.
“Arguably, a new government could consider the UK’s trading relationship with the EU anew without necessarily facing a large political cost,” Goldman analysts said. “A closer relationship with the EU might benefit trade and/or the currency.”
Rejoin EU Party leader Brendan Donnelly said: “Now even Rishi Sunak’s former employer is saying Brexit has damaged the economy and re-engaging with Europe could be the solution.
“Re-joining the EU would give a substantial boost to personal and governmental income. Everyone in the UK would be a winner.”
